2022 Red Wine - Napa Valley
Ms. Mildred
Mildred Connely’s vision set the trajectory of Theta Phi Alpha. A 1910 University of Michigan graduate, she served as acting president at the fateful August 30, 1912 meeting and became the first alumnae association president following commencement in 1913. Mildred went on to become Second National President, first Chairman of the Board of Trustees, was the first recipient of the Guard of Honor, and was designated “Lifetime Keeper of the Ritual.” Her eye for a Theta Phi Alpha of tomorrow during its humble beginnings and her zeal to drive change place her among the most impactful of its members.
Ms. Otilia
Otilia Leuchtweis O’Hara was born in Germany in 1889. Her parents owned and operated a vineyard. Her early life was marked by great loss, losing her parents and a relative before residing with her uncle in America. It is comforting to know she spent her collegiate days in the company of her sisters. Otilia was one of two collegians who formed Theta Phi Alpha, presided over the first initiation, and was the first to sign the initiation scroll. Otilia remained an enthusiastic supporter of Theta Phi Alpha throughout her lifetime, joining the eternal chapter in 1963.
Ms. May:
How does one imagine a Theta Phi Alpha without the enduring contributions of May Cecilia Ryan, which include the fraternity’s name, motto, and first crest? May graduated from the University of Michigan in 1895 and was the Head of the Latin Department for Toledo Public Schools. She was elected to the inaugural Board of Trustees for a four-year term, and with her sister, Camilla, opened their homes for a joint meeting of the Grand Council and the Board of Trustees to craft a plan for improved fraternity health in 1931. May died on May 18, 1935, following an extended illness, and was laid to rest at the Saint Thomas Catholic Cemetery in Ann Arbor.
